When is the best time to visit Kvernufoss?

Like many of Iceland’s outdoor sites, the best time to visit Kvernufoss is in the summer or autumn, specifically late May to early October.

As winter approaches, the hiking path can become slippery due to heavy snowfall and the driving conditions to reach the waterfall could be treacherous.

Safety rules when visiting

There are a few safety precautions to keep in mind when visiting Kvernufoss.

First, you’ll want to rent a proper car to reach the waterfall. During the summer and autumn months, a standard car without 4-wheel drive should do the trick. If you’re coming in winter, it’s a good idea to rent a 4×4 car and have experience driving in snowy and icy road conditions.

Second, it’s imperative that you never drive off road or go off-route in Iceland. If you do, you could be facing hefty fines. The same goes for hiking! Never leave the path both for safety reasons and to help maintain the natural environment.

Lastly, once you do reach the waterfall, be weary of slippery paths – especially if you go behind it! The trail can become a little treacherous due to moss and spray from the waterfall. You’ll want to wear sturdy footwear with good grip. Even better if it’s waterproof too!
